EUROPEAN UNION YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Young talents from all 28 EU states come together to form the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), a welcome guest at Grafenegg since 2009. Since 2018 it is also one of the orchestras in residence, and Grafenegg has become its Summer Home and Principal Venue Partner. Moreover, the EUYO has supported Campus Grafenegg right from the start. In 2019 it will be present in Grafenegg on April 21st during its spring tour, from 8 to 29 July during its annual multi-week residency and afterwards as part of the EUYO Summer Tour, giving concerts under its Music Director Vasily Petrenko and Stéphane Denève with symphonic milestones such as Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Among the highlights that will result from the work over the summer in Grafenegg are the residency at the Konzerthaus Berlin to mark the anniversary «20 Years of Young Euro Classics» and the orchestra’s debut at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. The EUYO’s stint in Grafenegg will be used not just as an intensive training phase but also to support the young musicians’ ongoing development: in four Music Labs, the orchestral players focus on themes including «How to talk to them - concert audiences and what to say to them» and «performance anxiety». Among the prominent lecturers are Daniel Hope, Elisabeth Grabner-Oprießnig (University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna) and Tom Service (BBC). Moreover, the EUYO will also create many more performances with exciting formats in Lower Austria and Vienna.

Portrait

The European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) is one of the world’s pre-eminent youth symphony orchestras, hailed by EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker as «the best possible ambassador for the European Union» and supported by the EU and its member states. Founded in 1976, the EUYO has worked with many notable artists including Daniel Barenboim, Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, founding Music Director Claudio Abbado, former Music Director Vladimir Ashkenazy, former Music Director and current Conductor Laureate Bernard Haitink and current Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko. Its members are aged 16 to 26, and the Orchestra’s more than 3,000 alumni are now notable conductors, soloists, teachers and instrumentalists working with major orchestras throughout the world. In 2018, with Grafenegg as the EUYO’s Summer Home and Principal Venue Partner, the EUYO became Orchestra in Residence at Grafenegg, in the same year moving its headquarters from London to Italy. Campus Grafenegg and the EUYO jointly offer opportunities for professional development to young musicians. The Grafenegg public has had many opportunities to experience the unique spirit of this orchestra. In spring, the Orchestra presents its Spring Concert and during July it returns with a series of concerts, a Music Gallery, Late Night Sessions and other special events.

MICHAEL SCHADE, tenor
VASILY PETRENKO, conductor

Bruckner was without a doubt one of the most pious composers in the history of music. He stayed true not only to God but to the genre of the symphony, which was at risk of disappearance in the Romantic era. His sweeping symphonies have a monumental quality, giving Bruckner the air of a stonemason in sound. In Grafenegg, the dynamic musicians of the European Union Youth Orchestra will fill one of Bruckner’s most popular “cathedrals” with life. They are preceded by star tenor Michael Schade singing Lieder by Richard Strauss – a composer who would take a very different path from Bruckner in his orchestral work.
