WORKSHOP PHASE 1

WORKSHOP PHASE 2

INK STILL WET Composer Conductor Workshop

Composer conductor-workshop INK STILL WET’s aim is to create a platform for young composers and to promote a unique creative exchange between audiences, composers and performing musicians.

Led by the Composer in Residence of the Grafenegg Festival, the intention of the INK STILL WET Workshop is to provide impulses for the creation of new works for orchestra. In addition, the workshop offers the opportunity to rehearse and perform an own work with a professional orchestra. Thus, also gaining a new perspective on one's own work. The participants’ works will be presented to the public in the workshop’s closing concert as part of the Grafenegg Festival.

INK STILL WET provides insights into all phases of an exciting work- and rehearsal-process. Both the concert of INK STILL WET as well as all the workshops are open and free of charge for an interested audience.

2020 sees the 10th edition of the INK STILL WET composer conductor-workshop.

Konstantía Gourzí, composer in residence of the Grafenegg Festival 2020, will oversee the INK STILL WET workshop. The workshop will be accompanied by the Tonkunstler Orchestra, one of the orchestras in residence of Grafenegg Festival.

The workshop takes place in two work phases. Part 1 of the workshop, which takes allows the participating composers the opportunity to work on and complete their work with the workshop leader, section leaders of the Orchestra. Part 2 taking place during the Grafenegg Festival, the workshop’s focus is on the preparation of the world premiere: participants will have the unique opportunity to rehearse their own compositions as conductors with the Tonkunstler Orchestra and present their works in concert.

Konstantía Gourzí works with the participating composers on the fine-tuning of their works and supports them in the preparation of conducting their pieces. The experience of performing one’s own composition from the conductor's desk allows to gain a new perspective on one's own work. Overcoming possible barriers between composers and the musicians in charge of executing the piece as well as the promotion of creative exchange are at the heart of the workshop.

All orchestra rehearsals are documented in detail, so that the participants and workshop leader by way of video analysis of the rehearsals and the participants’ conducting can continuously work on the realisation of pieces and the realisation of the participants’ musical ideas.

The compositions of all participating composers will be presented in a final concert in the Auditorium Grafenegg on 22nd August 2020 at 4.30 pm. After the concert an artist talk with the participants and the concert audience allows further insights.

Composer in Residence 2020

Konstantia Gourzi«INK STILL WET is more than a composition workshop. INK STILL WET allows the participants to rehearse their own orchestra music and perform it in concert. I consider this experience to be one of the most important ones for composers on their way: to develop the composition pragmatically in a way that sounds like what you have imagined.

The Grafenegg Festival offers young composers this great opportunity in the midst of nature and with the wonderful Tonkunstler Orchestra. I am very excited to be leading INK STILL WET 2020 and accompanying the participants in this experience.»
Konstantía Gourzí

Konstantía Gourzí studied composition and conducting in Athens and Berlin. She can frequently be seen in the double role of composer, and conductor of a concert. Her artistic and musical wish is to make connections – as a composer, between traditional and contemporary sound worlds; as a conductor with new conceptual emphases. Her work as a composer includes opera, film music, works for musical theatre, orchestra, numerous solo pieces, and chamber music. She has been commissioned by the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, the Lucerne Festival, the hr-Sinfonieorchester, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Nils Mönkemeyer, François Leleux, and the Heath, Minguet und Signum Quartets. Always searching for new performance concepts for contemporary music, Konstantía Gourzí has initiated concert series, and has also followed the example of her mentor Claudio Abbado and founded various ensembles such as attacca berlin, ensemble echo, ensemble oktopus and opus21musikplus. Supporting young musicians is also very important to her, and her former students can be found in all important European contemporary music ensembles.

Konstantía Gourzí was born in 1962 in Athens, Greece. She lives in Munich and has been Professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater since 2002.

In Grafenegg, Konstantía Gourzí will be Composer in Residence 2020 where she will contribute to the festival as composer and conductor.

PARTICIPANTS 2020

«INK STILL WET is more than a composition workshop. INK STILL WET enables the participants to rehearse their own orchestral music and perform it in concert. I think for young composers this experience is one of the most valuable ones their way: to develop their composing in a very pragmatic way so that what is imagined also translates into living sound. Grafenegg Festival offers young composers this great opportunity in the middle of nature and with the wonderful Tonkunstler Orchestra. I look forward to lead INK STILL WET 2020 and to accompany the participants in this experience.»

Hannah Eisendle

«Composing is like walking on thin ice – I might just crush it. Looking forward to be working on my piece «crushed ice» and experimenting with all the different sound dimensions ice has to offer.»

Hannah Eisendle

Konstantinos Koutroumpis

«The INK STILL WET workshop seems like the perfect place to achieve a greater level of confidence and skill both as a conductor and a composer by trying out - in the physical realm! - all those sounds that dwell in your head and then be an integral part of the realisation of what you composed. It must also be a tremendously fun and inspiring experience!»

Konstantinos Koutroumpis

Luis Laya

«From this experience, I would wish to connect with the workshop leader, with the other participants and with all beings with whom I will interact; to experience how to interpret my music, in a creatively fertile environment; to make exchanges of cultures, experiences, visions, emotions, spirituality and finally: to recognize what drives us, as humans, to be creative beings.»

Luis Laya

Maximilian Zimmermann

«There is nothing that I find more exciting than working on a world premiere with other musicians. I cannot wait for the workshop to start!»

Maximilian Zimmermann

Shiri Riseman

«I feel that there is a difficult gap to bridge between the task of the composer, and that of the instrumentalists, as neither of them knows what it is like to be on the other side. I hope to receive in the INK STILL WET workshop tools to deepen the understanding of the dialogue with the players, as well as to hone my conducting skills in order to take an active part in the performance of my music.»

Shiri Riseman

Tanja Glinsner

«I am thrilled to have the opportunity to engage in an artistic exchange with the musicians of such an outstanding orchestra and to benefit from their experience. For me, Konstantia Gourzi is a composer with an incredibly fascinating world of sound, from which I hope to get rich impulses and who I will have a lot of questions to ask.»
