Composer Conductor Workshop

Already in its ninth year, the composer conductor-workshop INK STILL WET, led each year by the Grafenegg Festival’s current Composer in Residence, has a proven track record in promoting creative talent. The Composer in Residence this year is Peter Ruzicka, whose stage and instrumental works are on programmes all over the world and who for decades has also enjoyed international renown both as a conductor of leading orchestras and as an artistic director. His conducting assistent is Seitaro Ishikawa. Composers are invited to submit scores of orchestral pieces that are works in which the composer’s pen has only recently left the manuscript paper. Up to six works are selected and worked on. In intensive rehearsal phases with the Tonkunstler Orchestra, participants are given the opportunity to conduct their own works and ultimately to present them in the Auditorium, gaining them valuable experience for their future careers. They have the rare chance to hear their music immediately after writing it and to find out if their ideas can be realised in practice. Previous experience of conducting a major orchestra is not required, since the focus is not on conducting but on expanding participants’ awareness of the approach taken by an orchestra to new scores. The individual creative processes are recorded on video and then analysed collaboratively. The workshop is open to the public with the intention of enabling a dialogue between the composers, orchestral players and the audience even before the concluding concert.

The Man Who Hears Beyond Boundaries
Peter Ruzicka: Composer in Residence
For Peter Ruzicka, music excites when it transcends worldly limitations, when concepts become sound, when the bounds of reality blur. He draws inspiration from Paul Celan’s attempts give form to the inexpressible. Ruzicka is a soul searcher. He uses the history of music as a spur to the new; as conductor he always seeks the ineffable. His own works have been premiered by the some of the world’s finest orchestras. As Composer in Residence at Grafenegg Ruzicka has inspired young musicians with his musical craft and awareness of tradition. He brings an opening fanfare to the festival and the premiere of a new work to the Wolkenturm.

"I am interested in crossovers and musical bilingualism, the change between the present and the unreal expression. ... That may sound theoretical, but in music this idea will hopefully become a tangible experience. " (Peter Ruzicka)
