Written in wartime, Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5 is dedicated to the «Triumph of the Human Spirit». Soviet artists had to glorify the state but can a yearning for freedom be heard in this enthralling work? Beethoven’s symphonies also express the «Triumph of the Human Spirit» in their own way, as in his Second played here by the Vienna Philharmonic.
