«Komm lieber Mai und mache die Baume wieder grün» («Come, dear May, and make the trees green again»): the melody from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s song «Sehnsucht nach dem Frühling» («Longing for spring») dances through the rondo finale of his last piano concerto KV 595. From there it’s only a short journey to Johann Strauss the Younger, whose waltz «Frühlingsstimmen» («Spring voices») is a monument to growing, budding and blossoming in spirited 3:4 time. And Johannes Brahms? Holidaying on the shores of the Wörthersee, the adopted Viennese composer wrote of melodies «flying so that you have to be careful not to tread on them». He composed his Second Symphony there: Its lyric finery and exuberant joy form the finale to this special Easter Concert with the European Union Youth Orchestra, the Austrian pianist Till Fellner and the Russian conductor Vasily Petrenko as stellar interpreters.
