It was not only the French who listened with growing fascination to all things Spanish across the Pyrenees: set off by the initial spark of Emanuel Chabrier's «España» of 1883, this enthusiasm spread as far as Russia, to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's «Capriccio espagnol». For Maurice Ravel, whose mother was Basque, it was practically a matter of family honour to celebrate the Iberian temperament. The fragrant moods of Manuel de Falla's dreamlike piano concerto «Nights in the Gardens of Spain» completes the magic - conjured by pianist Elena Bashkirova and Jun Märkl on the podium.
