It all began in 1876 when Richard Wagner introduced his «Ring of the Nibelung» to the world in the newly built Bayreuth Festival Theatre. Even then, a hand-picked orchestra played in the specially covered pit, the «mystical abyss». In 1886 the tradition every summer of assembling the Festival Orchestra from members of various orchestras began and has continued to today. Around 200 musicians from renowned orchestras in Germany and abroad come together especially for the Bayreuth Festival; many have been with the orchestra for years. Those are the pre-conditions for this sensational Bayreuth guest performance under Pablo Heras-Casado, in which major excerpts from the «Ring» bring the magic of the «Green Hill» to Grafenegg.
