Schlagwerkstatt

Colin Currie, himself once a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra, is a virtuoso percussionist like no other – and the foremost interpreter of Steve Reich’s music. For the final concert of his workshop, he has chosen music that can be made with the simplest of instruments: «Music for Pieces of Wood» requires nothing more than tuned wooden sticks. What else do you need for rhythm and sound? «One of the loudest pieces» he has ever composed, says Steve Reich, in contrast to his intricate «Mallet Quartet». Colin Currie is uniquely accomplished in both, as his recordings and live performances attest. In the Percussion Workshop, he shares his extensive knowledge with young musicians.
