Description
«Baron van Suiten, to whom I go every Sunday, gave me all works by Handel and Sebastian Bach |: after I played them through to him :| to take home»: so wrote Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in a letter from Vienna in 1782 to his sister Nannerl in Salzburg. The counterpoint studies by the then 26-year-old composer would exert a significant influence on his whole oeuvre. In the years before 1790, Mozart made a total of four arrangements of Handel’s oratorios, including the «Messiah», respectfully adapted to the changed tastes of his own time, for performances in the circle around Gottfried Freiherr van Swieten, an Enlightenment figure with a love of early music. The influence of this creative look back to the Baroque extended to his great Symphony K. 550 in G minor, which would have been virtually unthinkable without it. Patricia Nolz, Florian Boesch and the Concentus Musicus Wien under Stefan Gottfried are ideal as followers in the footsteps of these frontier-crossing musical explorations of yesteryear.
