Description
If there is one piece of music that reflects the ideals of the USA, then it is Aaron Copland’s «Appalachian Spring», premiered in 1944, a classic of American music: nature, community, love and religion – with the Shaker song «Simple Gifts» as a glorification of a simple life. Copland’s contemporary Samuel Barber was honoured with the Pulitzer Prize in 1963 for his highly virtuosic Piano Concerto. Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 demands no less of the soloist than Barber’s concerto, who masters these and other tasks with unlaboured virtuosity: the Chinese-born pianist Yuja Wang, a true phenomenon of our time. The splendid Mahler Chamber Orchestra was co-founded by Claudio Abbado in 1997 and continues to live up their founder's legendary status.
